Edwards combines molecular drag and regenerative pumping within a shared rotor–stator channel.
GB2641916A · Edwards Limited · published 24 December 2025 · UK patent application.
A shared working channel
Close rotor and stator surfaces provide molecular drag, while projecting blades repeatedly transfer momentum to gas. Curved sidewalls return gas toward following blades and produce regenerative circulation. Both effects act within one channel rather than in two separate pumps.
Geometry and scaling
The independent claim specifies a channel depth of 3–12 mm and a rotor contribution of 30–70% of the channel surface area. Channel depth is not the blade-tip clearance. Described embodiments use channel widths of 1.5–4 times the depth and blade heights of 40–60% of the depth.
Channels in series increase compression; channels in parallel increase throughput. Additional discs, sectors, inlets and outlets change this balance. Shortening the channel sector can improve throughput while reducing compression per section.
What is still required for selection?
A pressure region from 20 to 10−3 mbar is discussed for certain embodiments. It is not a verified specification for an entire commercial range. Selection requires pumping-speed and compression curves, thermal behaviour, permissible exhaust conditions and gas compatibility. Contaminating processes also require assessment of deposits and access for cleaning.
The application publication date is in 2025 even though this technical review was published in October 2026.
